Prison Tour Tale

Two summers ago my son was playing in a baseball tournament in the Moundsville area. My daughter, who was 10 years old, insisted that we tour the Moundsville prison.  I relented, even though, frankly I was nervous about the spirits there.  I knew it was unlikely that we would have an experience, but I was nervous, nonetheless.

We had completed a good part of the tour, when the guide took us to the Wagon Gate area of the prison. There was a small child in the group , a girl, who was adorable and could not have been older than three or four. Her parents carried her for most of the tour. She became very distraught in the wagon gate and they had to take her out of there.  Just after that part of the tour, we were taken into the prison cell area itself , purportedly where an inmate had murdered another (or two)? The exact details are sketchy.

As soon as we entered the prison area I was impressed with the horrible appearance of the area and an overwhelming  feeling of dread came over me in there.  When the parents of the little girl followed us in, she started crying and burying her head into her father’s shoulders. Her parents asked her what was wrong and she cried out, “MOMMY THERE ARE DEAD PEOPLE IN HERE. I SEE DEAD PEOPLE IN HERE. PLEASE GO HOME. “

All of the rest of us were rather shocked as the little girl’s parents aborted their tour.  There  is no doubt in my mind that the little girl validated what I had known all along…..
